A Century-Old Brand, a Legacy Carried Forward ▎OuQiao Technology Industrial Park Successfully Hosts
On September 12, 2026, the OuQiao Technology Industrial Park in Hungary held the 20th Ikarus Day commemoration. A classic industrial commemorative event with strong local influence, this year’s Ikarus Day drew many local Hungarians. Dr. Szabó Alexandra, Member of the Hungarian Parliament; Kovács Péter, Mayor of Budapest’s 16th District; Adamis Gábor, former Vice President of the Ikarus bus factory; Szabó Zsóka, President of the Ikarus Association; and Zhan Jingbo, General Manager of OuQiao Industrial Group, each delivered remarks.

Zhan Xiaorong, President of the Hungary Anhui Chamber of Commerce and Chairman of OuQiao Industrial, said that OuQiao Industrial feels both proud and responsible for having taken over the century-old industrial brand Ikarus and continuing to host the commemoration. As a Chinese-funded enterprise rooted in Hungary, the park draws on the opportunities of Belt and Road cooperation to integrate deeply into the local community and carry forward Ikarus’s industrial heritage, and is actively working to combine the strengths of China’s new energy vehicle industry with this century-old brand, so that the long-established industrial name can keep pace with the new era and reach the world stage.
Zhan Jingbo, General Manager of OuQiao Industrial, explained that Anhui OuQiao Industrial formally acquired Ikarus’s original core industrial park in 2019 and has taken part in organizing Ikarus Day since 2020, starting with the 14th edition, steadily keeping this classic local commemoration alive. Since moving in, the park has upgraded and renovated the aging factory buildings and infrastructure and has successfully weathered difficult times such as the pandemic and geopolitical conflicts. It has also worked closely with the Budapest 16th District government to bring high-tech, high-value-added Chinese industries to Hungary and, as a major local taxpayer, operates steadily and in compliance with the law, taking a long-term view.

Ikarus was founded in 1895 and incorporated as a company in 1949. At its peak it was the world’s fourth-largest bus manufacturer, with products exported to more than 80 countries. Several models once operated in many major Chinese cities, making Ikarus an important witness to early industrial cooperation between China and Hungary.
The highlight of this year’s event was the arrival of many classic Ikarus buses from different eras, driven into the park. Among them, an Ikarus 200 Cabrio open-top bus carrying a band playing live jazz rolled slowly into the park, drawing everyone’s attention. A red-and-white Ikarus 311 (the earlier model being the Ikarus 31) was especially eye-catching, its signature chrome “pig-nose” grille and double-curved windscreen giving it a strong retro feel.
In total, 20 representative Ikarus vehicles were on display that day and took passengers on a parade to the city center. The vintage buses were open to the public throughout, and visitors could board and experience them. The park also set up children’s play facilities and a souvenir stand, and screened Ikarus commemorative films. After professional restoration, these classic buses retain their original appearance in full and now serve mainly as city sightseeing vehicles, preserving a sense of industrial nostalgia.

Rooted in Hungary as a Chinese-funded park, the OuQiao Technology Industrial Park is not only the custodian of Ikarus’s industrial heritage but also an important overseas base for Anhui’s opening-up and for Anhui enterprises going global. As Anhui’s overseas business service outlet in Hungary, the park actively offers one-stop services for Anhui enterprises expanding into Hungary and Central and Eastern Europe, including market research, legal and financial advisory, registration and site selection, warehousing and logistics, and trade-fair matchmaking, promoting “Anhui enterprises and Anhui products going global” while fostering two-way investment, trade and people-to-people exchanges. Recently, the park was named an “Anhui Provincial Key Overseas Economic and Trade Cooperation Zone” by the Anhui Provincial Department of Commerce. This honor recognizes the park’s long-term commitment in Hungary and its service to Anhui’s open economy, and gives new impetus to its next steps: attracting more industries, raising its capabilities and building a model platform for China-Europe cooperation.

The successful 20th Ikarus Day was a heartfelt tribute to Hungary’s century-old industrial heritage and a vivid microcosm of the people-to-people bonds and industrial integration between China and Hungary under the Belt and Road Initiative. Going forward, the OuQiao Technology Industrial Park will continue to take Ikarus as its medium, Anhui as its bridge and China-Hungary cooperation as its sail, bringing new vitality to this century-old industrial brand, helping more Anhui and Chinese enterprises enter Hungary and Europe, and helping more European friends get to know and invest in Anhui.
