Wang Yi Speaks on the Phone with Hungarian Foreign Minister Szijjarto at Request
On July 17, 2022, Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi had a telephone conversation with Hungarian Foreign Minister Szijjartoat the request.
Szijjarto introduced the current situation in Europe and Hungary, especially the economic and financial challenges that Hungary faces due to the spillover from the Ukraine crisis. He said that Hungary is pleased with the achievements of Hungary-China cooperation in various fields, especially the smooth progress of economic, trade and investment cooperation. He is willing to maintain high-level exchanges with China and push the Hungary-China comprehensive strategic partnership to a new level. Chinese enterprises are welcome to invest in Hungary, which will provide convenience and a favorable environment.

In recent years, the new crown pneumonia epidemic has continued to spread around the world, posing challenges to the economic development of various countries, while the economic and trade cooperation between China and Hungary has risen against the trend. According to statistics, in 2020, the bilateral trade volume between China and Hungary reached 11.69 billion US dollars, a year-on-year increase of 14.4%, a record high, and China became Hungary's largest source of foreign investment for the first time. In 2021, the bilateral trade volume will reach US$15.71 billion, a year-on-year increase of 34.5%.Among them, our export value was 10.15 billion US dollars, a year-on-year increase of 37.1%, and our import value was 5.56 billion US dollars, a year-on-year increase of 30.0%.With the world economy severely impacted by the epidemic and the international market continuing to slump, this report card attracts attention.

Foreign Minister Wang Yi first expounded on the negative effects brought about by the Ukraine crisis, and said that China is not a party to the Ukraine crisis, but we have not stood idly by, nor will we add fuel to the fire, and have always been firm and persistent in persuading peace and talks. The lessons of the Ukraine crisis are profound and worthy of serious learning by all parties. For a long-term plan, all parties should discuss building a balanced, effective and sustainable European security architecture to achieve lasting peace and security.
Wang Yi said that the Chinese side cherishes the trust and friendship established with the Hungarian side, appreciates the Hungarian side's consistent upholding justice in China-related affairs, understands China's legitimate proposition, supports the Chinese side in safeguarding its legitimate rights and interests, and is willing to work with the Hungarian side to build China-Hungary relations. It is a model of state-to-state relations with more mature and mutual trust.
China will continue to unswervingly pursue a friendly policy towards Hungary, hold a positive and open attitude towards mutually beneficial cooperation between the two sides, and support Chinese enterprises to invest and start businesses in Hungary. It is hoped that Hungary will provide stable policy expectations and a favorable business environment. It is believed that Hungary will continue to uphold an objective and fair position and push the EU to adopt a positive and pragmatic policy towards China.
It is understood that in recent years, Hungary has repeatedly supported China on international issues. For example, in May 2021, when the EU announced the suspension of ratification of the China-EU Trade and Investment Agreement, Hungary expressed its opposition; In July 2020, when the Philippines came up with the so-called "South China Sea arbitration case", the result came out, and Hungary refused to recognize the so-called "arbitration result”; When many Western countries banned China's Huawei, Hungary stood up and expressed its hope that Huawei would help Hungary build 5G base stations. It can be seen that Hungary is China's best partner in Europe. I believe that with the further strengthening of China-Hungary economic and trade cooperation, the friendship between the two countries will only increase and not decrease.
Szijjarto said that China has never been a European rival, but a partner that brings opportunities for cooperation. Hungary will continue to be committed to promoting EU-China cooperation based on mutual respect, fairness and mutual benefit.
